Doctor who:language and representation

social and historical context

1)An unearthly child reflects the social and historical contexts of the 1960's by the typical way of how men where shown to have more power and status over women and we see this with when the doctor completely ignores what Barbra wright says to him.
2)Audiences might react in a way where they may be scared at least for a lower class background or a audience may be confused and may not understand what science fiction is.

Language and close-textual analysis

1)The Tardis scene where the doctor and the teachers are trapped are trying to find a way out but the doctor still seems to be a cunning and evil villain. In this scene we see lots of narrative in this scene wit the use of the Todorov-equilibrium theory the mystery of where Susan lived. Also the disequilibrium is now provided with the teachers being trapped.

Also in the first scene we learn a lot about the characters and their morals with Susan Foreman dressed like a typical teenage girl in the 1960's.But her being a genius at the same time and Ian saying that she is more knowledgeable than the teachers.

In scene 3 we see Iconography with the doctor acting in a peculiar way when he completely ignores what Ian and Barbra are saying to him  and continues to say 'I haven't see that before.' The darkness and the shadows telling the audience that it is a classic sci-fi show,And the police box.

setting

2)Todorov's Equilibrium theory apply's to an unearthly child because the element of equilibrium that it has and the disequilibrium the equilibrium being that the teachers find out here Susan Foreman lives, and the disequilibrium being the teachers being stuck in the TARDIS and knowing one knowing if they are going to escape or not.An example of disruption throughout the episode could be when the teachers are trying to find out about Susan's strange living. and you could argue that their is no equilibrium in the unearthly child and that they are just travelling through time and space.

3)A character type that fits one of the roles of the main character is the doctor as the villain even though he is supposed to be the hero. And could possibly say no one is the hero in unearthly child as no one actually resolves the problem. The helper being Susan Foreman and Barbra wright as Susan is a helper to the doctor and Barbra is a helper to Ian.

4)An enigma code could be that the audience would ask where are they?what planet are they? on etc.
An action code be who was that strange shadow at the end of the episode?are they going to have fight aliens and other species?we also see mise-en-scene with the lighting with a dark background and a shooting flare into the sky and we also see facial expressions with the doctor looking quite dizzy as the tardis takes off.

5)Example's of binary opposition would be young v old with Susan and the doctor or human v alien, good v evil with Ian and the doctor.and these creates narrative in the show because it makes the audiences feel tension with for example alien v human the audience wants to know who would win and so it make the audience want to carry on watching.

Representations

1)A stereotype of men that is being reinforced is that men during the time were meant to be seen as powerful and grappling in a masculine way which was how men were meant to have acted during the 1960's.but you could say that stereotypes are subverted with the doctor being cunning and evil.

2) A stereotype of women/girls that is reinforced in unearthly child is that women/girls were see to not rebel and talk back and we see this with Susan when she keeps asking her grandfather (the doctor) that she wants to stay.women in 1960's were often ignored whenever they were trying to get a point across and we see this reinforced with the doctor ignoring what Barbra was saying and only talking to Ian.It also subverts stereotypes of girls in the 1960's because teenage girls weren't meant to rebel whereas today it is more common.

3)common stereotypes of  teenage girls or young people was that they were often acting childish or in a childish way whenever they would try to get their point across.

4)A representation of race/ethnicity that can be found in doctor who an unearthly child could be when the doctor was make racial comments and said 'red Indian and their savage mind blown.'

5)social class ids represented in doctor who unearthly child with all the characters being middle class educated people.and i think it is showing that because all the characters are middle class educated people and it is a science fiction tv show it could me that the show is for middle class people who understand or who are interested in science fiction and not for the lower class.
