Denotation and Connotation

 




Denotation-we can see a boy who is unhappy and wearing torn clothes.

Connotation-this picture from water aid advert suggest that they are trying to make people feel sympathy for the boy because he has a innocent face an has torn clothes.Also the text is trying to go into depth to create a meaning of them saying that donating could save their lives and by donating they wouldn't have to dig graves and they could dig toilets instead.

Analysis-The effect this gives on the target audience is that the producers want their audience to feel sympathy for the boy as he looks innocent and harmless also the concrete tells people that this boy is set in a place that is not good for a child to stay again allowing the audience to have pitty for him



Denotation-In the picture we can see a supernatural creature which seems to be half spider half snake and we can also see the 'v' in the middle signifying the name of the character.

Connotation-The picture of the supernatural creature suggest that this movie is going to be a horror/sci-fi film also the red and black connotes darkness and death with strong tones of red in the title of the film also in the name of the actor it is starring it is half white half red which could mean half pure half evil or half human half venom.Additionaly the all black background suggest darkness.

Analysis-The effect that this gives on the target audience is that the producers of the film are aiming for people who like horror and sci-fi and in this film poster they are trying they are showing those elements of horror with choosing the colours red and black. this draws attention to the people who like watching these kinds of films.
